Starling is a UK digital bank that recruits early-careers people through individual vacancies rather than a named graduate scheme, so there is no single application to make and no fixed intake. The same job board also carries roles for Engine by Starling, its separate banking-software business, so a search for Starling openings has to include anything labelled Engine.

How Starling Bank recruits
There is no scheme to apply to. Starling and Engine post individual vacancies on one board, and each advert publishes its own interview stages, which differ from role to role, so read the advert rather than assuming a house process. Engine says it aims to respond to every application within 7 days and that most interview processes take about 3 to 4 weeks from start to finish. Engine also says applications are only accepted through its careers page and that it cannot take them by email or LinkedIn message.
Starling does not publish an application window, an opening month or a cycle. Roles appear on the board through the year, and individual adverts sometimes carry their own closing date, occasionally a short one and occasionally with a time of day attached rather than just a date. Our pipeline reads no closing date from their board, so the advert itself is the only place that line appears. Read it before assuming a role stays open.

Worth knowing
- Engine by Starling is Starling. Engine is described in its own adverts as Starling's software-as-a-service business that was split out as a separate business, and its roles are posted on Starling's own job board. If you skip anything called Engine when you are searching for Starling, you will skip real Starling openings, including the entry-level ones.
- Engine says it does not currently run internships or placement schemes, so there is no summer programme to apply to on that side of the business. The only internship Starling has published an account of is a blog post dated 25 September 2023 about an eight week summer programme with seven interns, all based in the London office, most of them going into their final year of university.
- Every role is tied to one office and working is hybrid, so apply for the city you can actually commute to. Engine's careers page lists offices in London, Cardiff, Southampton and Manchester in the UK plus Dublin, and Starling's careers page lists the same five. Engine says each role will be specified to an office, so check before applying.
- A title starting with Junior does not always mean entry level. The Junior Information Security Analyst (GRC) advert welcomes recent graduates but still lists a minimum of one year of experience in an information security role under its requirements, and the Junior Technical Project Manager advert opens its requirements with end-to-end project or programme management experience. Read the requirements before you spend an application on it.
- If you are turned down, Engine asks you to wait 12 months before reapplying for the same position, but says a different position is fine to apply for whenever you see one.
- Engine publishes an engineering career ladder, and its lowest rung, Engineer I, is described as an engineer who delivers well-defined tasks with the support of their team, still honing their skills and building foundational engineering knowledge. That is the level to look for if you are coming straight out of a degree.
- Deadlines can be hard, and can carry a time of day rather than just a date. Some Starling and Engine adverts publish a closing line with an hour on it, and it does not reach us through their job board, so the advert is the only place you will see it.
